Structuring a SaaS Comparison Page AI Engines Can Actually Extract
A comparison page written for persuasive flow and a comparison page written for AI extraction are structured differently. The version that gets cited leads with a direct, attributable claim per competitor and isolates each comparison point instead of building toward a conclusion.
Most "us vs. [competitor]" pages are written the way a salesperson would talk through it: build the context, acknowledge the competitor's strengths, then land on why the reader should pick you. That structure works on a human reading top to bottom. It works badly for a model that pulls one paragraph out of context and has to decide, on its own, whether that paragraph is a fair, citable answer.
Why persuasive structure loses to extractable structure
An AI engine does not read a comparison page the way a prospect does. It scans for a sentence or block it can lift as a self-contained, attributable claim, such as "[Product] supports X, [Competitor] does not" or "[Product] is priced at Y, [Competitor] at Z." A page that only reaches its clearest comparative statement in paragraph six, after several paragraphs of scene-setting, gives a model very little to extract from the parts it is most likely to scan first.
What an extractable comparison page looks like
- One comparison point per block. Feature-by-feature, priced-tier-by-priced-tier, use-case-by-use-case sections extract far more cleanly than a single flowing narrative that weaves several points together.
- The verdict stated early, the nuance after. Lead each section with the direct comparative claim, then add context and caveats below it, rather than building up to the claim as a payoff.
- Named entities throughout. Referring to "the competitor" or "other tools" after the first mention forces a model to re-resolve what is being compared; naming both products in every comparative sentence removes that ambiguity.
- Tables for anything genuinely tabular. Pricing tiers, feature matrices, and integration lists extract more reliably as structured tables than as prose describing the same data.
Fair comparison content earns more trust than aggressive comparison content
A page that only makes favorable claims reads as marketing to a model the same way it does to a skeptical prospect. Acknowledging a genuine competitor strength, stated plainly rather than buried, tends to make the surrounding claims more likely to be cited, because it signals the page is describing the market rather than only selling into it.
